What the Etsy tag generator does

Etsy gives every listing exactly thirteen tag slots and caps each one at twenty characters. This tool reads the listing you paste in — its title, description, category and attributes — and fills all thirteen slots with phrases that fit inside that limit and actually describe your item. You get a complete set to review, not three ideas and a blank grid.

The reason a generator helps here is arithmetic, not magic. Thirteen slots multiplied by a twenty-character ceiling is a genuinely constrained puzzle: most of the phrases sellers want to use are too long, and the ones that fit are often single words that compete with a million other listings. The tool does the fitting; you do the judging.

How to use it, step by step

    1. Paste the listing URL or ID. No account needed to generate a set.
    2. Look at your current tags first. Count how many slots you are actually using. Plenty of listings are sitting on six.
    3. Generate the thirteen. The tool returns a full set, each tag already inside the twenty-character limit.
    4. Cut anything untrue. If a tag describes a material, size or occasion your item does not have, delete it. An inaccurate tag brings the wrong visitor, who bounces.
    5. Check for duplication. Two tags that mean the same thing waste a slot. Etsy will reject exact duplicates, but near-duplicates like “dog collar” and “collar dog” slip through and still waste the slot.
    6. Paste them into Etsy, or connect your shop and apply the approved set directly.
    7. Give it time before judging. Etsy search does not re-rank instantly. Note the date you changed the tags and look again in a few weeks.

    A worked example

Take a handmade tan leather dog collar with an engraved brass name plate. Here is the tag set most sellers write first:

Before dog, collar, pet, gift, custom, leather, handmade, cute, dog collar, pet gift, dog gift, personalized, name

Nine of those thirteen are single words. “Dog,” “pet,” “gift” and “custom” are among the most contested terms on Etsy, and “cute” is an opinion nobody types into a search bar. The set also never mentions leather colour, buckle material, engraving or dog size — the four things a buyer actually chooses between.

Now the same product, using all thirteen slots on phrases a real shopper types. Character counts are shown so you can see how tight twenty characters is:

    • leather dog collar 18
    • engraved dog collar 19
    • personalized collar 19
    • custom name collar 18
    • dog collar with name 20
    • brass buckle collar 19
    • tan leather collar 18
    • small dog collar 16
    • large dog collar 16
    • handmade pet collar 19
    • puppy collar gift 17
    • new puppy gift 14
    • dog owner gift 14

Every tag is a phrase, and every phrase is something a person would plausibly type. Three of them cover personalization in different words, because shoppers are inconsistent about whether they search personalized, custom or with name. Two cover dog size, which is the question a buyer asks before anything else. Two cover the gifting occasion without spending the entire set on it.

Notice what did not fit. “Personalized leather dog collar” is thirty-one characters — well over the limit — so that phrase has to be split across slots or dropped. That constraint is the single biggest thing that makes Etsy tagging different from tagging anywhere else, and it is why generic advice like “use long-tail keywords” often does not survive contact with the actual field.

    Etsy's actual rules for tags

    RuleWhat it means in practice
13 tags per listingA hard ceiling and a target. Unused slots are relevance you simply did not claim.
20 characters per tagSpaces count. Most three-word phrases fit; most four-word phrases do not.
Multi-word phrases allowedA tag is a phrase, not a keyword. “Dog collar with name” is one tag, not four.
No duplicate tagsEtsy rejects exact repeats. Near-duplicates are allowed but waste the slot.
Letters, numbers, spaces and a few marksHyphens and apostrophes are accepted, along with accented characters. Most other punctuation is not.
Tags are not case-sensitive“Dog Collar” and “dog collar” are the same tag. Capitalisation buys you nothing.
Attributes and categories already countIf you have set an attribute such as colour or occasion, you do not need to spend a tag repeating it.
Tags feed query matchingThey are matched alongside your title, category and attributes when Etsy decides which listings are relevant to a search.
Misspellings are not a strategyEtsy handles common variations. A deliberately misspelled tag mostly just burns a slot.

Limits last reviewed on 24 August 2026. Etsy changes them from time to time — confirm against Etsy's own Help Centre before you build a process around any of them.

How to choose thirteen phrases that are not the same phrase

The most common failure is thirteen slots spent on one idea. A useful set spreads across the different ways people describe the same object. Work through these angles and you will rarely run out of distinct tags:

    • The object itself: what it literally is — “leather dog collar,” “linen apron,” “nursery wall print.”
    • Material and construction: “brass buckle collar,” “hand stamped brass,” “solid oak shelf.”
    • Size, format or variant: “small dog collar,” “a4 digital print,” “king size quilt.”
    • Style and aesthetic: “minimalist,” “boho,” “mid century” — but only paired with the product, never alone.
    • Recipient: “dog owner gift,” “gift for teacher,” “new mum gift.”
    • Occasion or moment: “new puppy gift,” “housewarming gift,” “first birthday.”
    • Personalization language: “custom name,” “engraved,” “monogrammed” — shoppers use all three inconsistently.

You will not use every angle on every product, and you should not force it. A craft supply listing has no meaningful occasion; a wedding sign has little to say about size. Use the angles that genuinely apply and let the set be honest.

Tag mistakes that quietly cost traffic

    • Leaving slots empty: a listing with seven tags has thrown away six chances to match a query, at no benefit to anyone.
    • Single-word tags only: “gift” puts you in competition with essentially all of Etsy. Phrases are how a small shop gets found.
    • Tags the listing cannot support: tagging “wedding” on an item with nothing wedding about it brings visitors who leave immediately, which helps nothing.
    • Repeating the title verbatim: tags are a second surface, not a copy of the first. Use them for the phrasings the title had no room for.
    • Another shop's brand name: using someone else's trademark as a tag is a policy risk, not a clever hack.
    • Changing all thirteen every week: constant churn means you never learn anything. Change a set, date it, wait.

    Frequently asked questions

How many tags does Etsy allow?

Thirteen per listing, and each tag can be up to twenty characters including spaces. Etsy will not accept a fourteenth tag or a longer one. Using all thirteen is generally worth doing, provided each one honestly describes the item — an empty slot matches nothing.

Should Etsy tags be single words or phrases?

Phrases, in almost every case. A tag is matched as a whole phrase, and shoppers search in phrases — “leather dog collar,” not “dog.” Single-word tags put you in the largest and most competitive pool on the site. Use the twenty characters to be specific.

Do my tags need to match my title?

They should describe the same item, but they should not be a copy of it. The title has 140 characters and the tags have thirteen twenty-character slots, so each surface can carry phrasings the other has no room for. Use the tags for the synonyms, recipients and occasions your title had to leave out.

Do plurals and capital letters matter in Etsy tags?

Capitalisation does not — tags are not case-sensitive, so “Dog Collar” and “dog collar” are the same tag. Etsy also handles common variations between singular and plural forms, so spending two separate slots on “collar” and “collars” is usually a wasted slot.

How long before new tags make a difference?

Longer than most sellers expect. Etsy re-evaluates listings over time rather than instantly, and a change to one listing among thousands of competitors is a small signal. Record the date you changed the tags, leave them alone for several weeks, then look at the listing's stats before changing anything else.

Is the Etsy tag generator free?

Yes — you can generate a full thirteen-tag set without an account. Connecting your Etsy shop is optional, and only needed if you want to apply approved tags to your listings directly from here instead of copying them across by hand.

Where tags fit in the rest of the listing

Tags are one of several surfaces Etsy reads, and they work best when the rest of the listing agrees with them.
