Free Etsy AI Title Generator

Etsy allows up to 140 characters in a listing title, but search results and the app cut it off much sooner, so the first few words decide whether a buyer clicks. Paste your listing URL below and the generator drafts a clearer, keyword-led title for you to edit.

What the Etsy AI title generator does

Sellers search for this as an Etsy SEO title generator, an AI title generator or just a title tool. They are the same job: turning what you sell into a title Etsy can match against a query and a shopper can understand at a glance.

Paste a listing URL or listing ID and the tool reads the listing Etsy already has - the current title and the description - then drafts a replacement title that fits inside Etsy's 140-character limit. It shows the old title and the new one side by side, so you are comparing two concrete options rather than staring at an empty box.

What it is not is a ranking guarantee. A title tells a shopper what an item is and gives Etsy's search something to match a query against. Photos, price, delivery expectations, reviews and the product itself decide what happens after the shopper arrives. Treat the suggestion as a first draft from someone who has read your listing carefully, then edit it as the person who actually made the thing.

The words at the front of the title should be the ones buyers actually search. Etsy keyword research shows how to find them before you edit the draft.

How to use it, step by step

  1. Paste the listing. Either the full Etsy URL or just the numeric listing ID from it. You do not need an account to run a listing through the tool.
  2. Read the current title first. Before looking at the suggestion, note what is wrong with what you have: is the product type missing, buried, or repeated four times?
  3. Generate the suggestion. The tool returns a title inside the 140-character limit, leading with the product and following with the qualifiers it found in your listing.
  4. Edit for truth. Delete any material, size, occasion or claim that is not exactly right for the item. This is the step people skip, and it is the one that matters most.
  5. Check it against your first photo. If a shopper saw only this title and your thumbnail, would the item be what they expected? If not, fix the title or fix the photo.
  6. Apply or copy it. Copy the title into Etsy, or connect your shop once and apply approved titles directly from here.
  7. Write down the date. Note which listing you changed and when. Etsy search takes time to settle, and without a record you will not know later which edit did what.

A worked example

Here is a pattern we see constantly - a gift-keyword title that never says what the product is.

Before - 128 characters Handmade Gift for Her, Best Gift, Unique Gift Idea, Personalized, Custom, Birthday Gift, Anniversary Gift, Gift for Mom, Present

After - 132 characters Personalized Birthstone Necklace, Gold Filled Name Necklace, Custom Mom Jewelry, Birthday Gift for Her, 18 Inch Chain, Made to Order

Both titles are comfortably under 140 characters, so length was never the problem. The difference is that the first one never names the product. A shopper searching birthstone necklace has nothing to match against, and a shopper who does land on it cannot tell whether they are looking at a necklace, a mug or a candle until they study the photo.

The rewrite says necklace in the first three words, then spends its remaining characters on things a buyer chooses between: the metal (gold filled), the personalization (birthstone, name), the chain length (18 inch) and the fulfilment model (made to order). Every one of those is a real attribute of the listing, which is why the title can carry it. The generic gift phrasing has not disappeared - “Birthday Gift for Her” is still there - it has just stopped being the entire title.

Notice what the rewrite gave up: Anniversary Gift, Unique Gift Idea and Best Gift are gone. That is the trade every good title makes. 140 characters is not enough room for every occasion a product could suit, so you spend them on the words that describe this specific object.

Etsy's actual rules for listing titles

The first two are hard limits Etsy enforces when you save. The rest are consequences of how the title gets used once it is live, and they shape a good title just as much.

RuleWhat it means in practice
140 characters maximumSpaces, commas and hyphens all count. Etsy will not let you save a longer title.
Must start with a letter or numberYou cannot open with a quotation mark, an emoji or another special character.
The title feeds query matchingWords in the title are part of what Etsy matches a shopper's search against, alongside tags, categories and attributes.
No trademarked or borrowed brand namesDescribing your item with another company's brand name is a policy problem, not a shortcut.
It truncates in the results gridOn a phone a shopper sees roughly the first line. Everything after that is only read by people who already clicked.
Google uses it as the page titleEtsy listings rank in Google too, and Google shows around the first 60 characters. Your opening words do double duty.
Repetition does not multiply relevanceWriting “gift” six times does not make the listing six times more relevant. It spends characters you could have used on a real attribute.

Limits last reviewed on 24 August 2026. Etsy changes them from time to time - confirm against Etsy's own Help Centre before you build a process around any of them.

What makes a title useful

A useful title is specific, natural and honest. It identifies the main product before optional details, then adds the differentiators a buyer needs in order to choose: material, style, recipient, use case, colour or personalization. The right balance depends on the item. A handmade ceramic mug and a printable party invitation need different language because shoppers look for different attributes.

  • Lead with the product: put the clearest product phrase near the beginning. “Personalized leather keychain” explains the item faster than a string of occasions.
  • Add only meaningful qualifiers: “hand stamped,” “walnut,” “minimalist,” “digital download” - when they are accurate and useful.
  • Write for people as well as search: a long list of loosely related phrases is hard to scan. Avoid repeating the same term with tiny variations.
  • Match the listing itself: the title must agree with the first image, the options, the materials and the description. A title that overstates an item creates doubt and more pre-purchase questions.

Prepare the listing before you generate

The suggestion is only as good as the information available in the listing. Before you analyse a product, confirm that the product type, materials, size, personalization options and intended buyer are clearly described. If your item comes in several versions, decide which version the title represents. That preparation is what keeps the result specific instead of vague.

It also helps to write down a handful of buyer phrases in your own words - the object, the style, the recipient, the situation. A seller of a personalized teacher tote might start with “teacher tote bag,” “custom name tote” and “end of year teacher gift.” Those are prompts for your own thinking, not phrases to force into one title.

Common title mistakes

  • Starting with an internal collection name: “The Willow Collection” means something in your shop and nothing to a new shopper. Product type first.
  • Claims that need proof: avoid promises about quality, origin, timing or results unless the listing substantiates them.
  • Hiding the format: say whether the item is physical, digital, made to order, personalized or a craft supply when that changes what the buyer receives.
  • Copying a competitor's wording: borrowing another shop's distinctive phrasing misleads shoppers and creates avoidable risk.
  • Rewriting everything in one afternoon: change a batch, record what you changed, and give Etsy time before you judge the result.

Where the title fits in the rest of the listing

Once the title is right, the same accurate product language should appear in the tags and the description. Generate a matching tag set with the Etsy tag generator, tighten the written detail with the AI description tool, and run the whole listing through the Etsy listing checker to see what else is holding it back. When you want to know what a sale from that listing is actually worth, the free Etsy fee calculator breaks out every fee on the order.

140 characters, including spaces and punctuation. Etsy will not save a longer one. The practical limit is shorter than that, though: shoppers on a phone see roughly the first line in the results grid, and Google shows around the first 60 characters when the listing appears there, so the opening words carry most of the weight.
