  • Promotes New Products or Sales: Shop announcements allow you to inform customers about new items, limited-time offers, discounts, or seasonal sales, which can drive more traffic and increase sales.
  • Highlights Key Features or Services: You can use the announcement to emphasize what makes your shop special, such as personalized items, custom options, or unique designs.
  • Builds a Connection with Customers: Announcements give you the opportunity to share personal insights, updates, or behind-the-scenes info about your shop, helping to create a stronger relationship with customers.
  • Communicates Shipping Information: It's an effective place to share important details about shipping times, delays, or special delivery options, ensuring customers have the latest info.
  • Clarifies Policies: You can provide clear guidance on shop policies, like returns, exchanges, or direct gift shipping, which helps prevent misunderstandings.
  • Boosts Searchability: Etsy's algorithms can pick up keywords from your announcement, so including relevant terms can improve your shop's visibility in searches.
  • Provides Timely Updates: If you're away or your shop is temporarily closed, you can use the announcement to notify customers about when you'll be back and ready to fulfill orders.

In short, Etsy shop announcements are a key way to keep customers informed, promote your products, and build rapport.

The complete guide to your Etsy shop announcement

The advice above covers what to say. This section covers everything around it: where the announcement actually appears, how much of it a shopper ever sees, what it does and does not do for your ranking, and templates you can adapt for the times of year when it matters most.

What the Etsy shop announcement is, and where it shows up

The shop announcement is a block of text you write once and Etsy displays near the top of your shop's home page, above your listings. It is not attached to any single item, which makes it the only place in your shop where you can speak to a shopper about the shop as a whole — who you are, what is happening right now, and what they should know before they buy.

It matters more than most sellers assume, because of where it is read. A shopper who has clicked through from a listing to see "what else this shop has" lands on your shop home page, and the announcement is the first sentence they meet. It is also, in practice, the text Google most often pulls into the description under your shop in its results, which means it is doing work for people who have not reached Etsy yet.

Only the first line or so is actually read

This is the single most useful thing to know about the field. Etsy truncates the announcement after roughly 160 characters and hides the rest behind a "read more" link. Most shoppers never click it.

So the announcement is really two pieces of writing with different jobs:

  • The first ~160 characters: the part everyone sees. This has to work as a complete thought on its own. If it ends mid-sentence, or spends its length on a greeting, you have used the whole visible window saying nothing.
  • Everything after: read only by the minority who expand it. This is the right home for processing times, shipping notes, care instructions and policy detail — genuinely useful, but not what should greet a first-time visitor.

A practical test: read only your first sentence, and ask whether a stranger would know what your shop sells and why they should keep scrolling. If not, rewrite that sentence before you touch anything else.

Does the shop announcement help your Etsy SEO?

Not directly, and it is worth being precise about this because a lot of advice overstates it. Etsy's search ranks listings, using listing titles, tags, attributes, categories and the shop's performance signals. Text in your shop announcement is not a listing field, and stuffing keywords into it will not lift any individual listing in Etsy search.

It does help you in two real, indirect ways:

  • Outside Etsy: Google indexes your shop home page, and the announcement is usually the most descriptive text on it. A clear opening line gives Google something accurate to show searchers looking for your shop or your niche by name.
  • Through conversion: announcements that answer a hesitation — when it ships, whether it is handmade, whether it can be personalised — keep visitors moving toward a listing instead of leaving. Etsy's ranking does respond to the engagement and conversion your shop earns, so the announcement contributes to ranking through behaviour rather than through keywords.

Write it for the shopper, in other words, and let the SEO benefit follow. Keywords crammed in at the expense of readability cost you on both counts.

What to put in a shop announcement

Working front to back, in the order a shopper needs it:

  1. What you make, in plain words. "Hand-poured soy candles in small batches" tells a stranger more than "Welcome to my shop!" ever will. Lead with the product, not the greeting.
  2. The one thing happening now. A sale, a restock, a closure, a shipping delay. If nothing is happening, skip it rather than inventing urgency — a permanent "SALE!" stops being read within a visit.
  3. The reassurance that removes the biggest doubt. Usually current processing time, or that everything ships from where you say it does. This is what a hesitant buyer is looking for.
  4. Where to go next. A gentle pointer to a section, a bestseller, or a custom-order request — the announcement is a signpost, not a destination.

Anything longer than that belongs in your shop policies or your FAQ section, both of which shoppers can find when they want them.

Worked examples

Each of these keeps its meaning inside the visible window. The note underneath explains what the line is doing.

Everyday, no promotion runningHand-poured soy candles made in small batches in Devon. Orders ship within 2 working days, gift-wrapped free.

Product first, then the one fact that answers "when will it arrive". Nothing wasted on a greeting.

Genuine sale20% off all prints until Sunday — no code needed. Original illustrations, printed and packed by me in Leeds.

The offer leads because it is real and it expires. The second sentence still says what the shop is, for anyone who arrived cold.

Holiday cut-offOrder by 15 December for UK Christmas delivery. Personalised wooden decorations, hand-engraved to order.

The deadline is the most valuable information you have in December, so it goes first.

Shop closure or holidayShop is on holiday until 8 January — orders placed now will ship on the 9th. Thank you for your patience!

States the date twice, in both directions. A shopper should not have to work out what "back soon" means.

New shop, few sales yetHand-knitted baby blankets in merino wool, made to order in any colour. Every order is packed and posted by me.

A new shop cannot lean on reviews, so it leans on specificity and on the fact that a person is behind it.

Seasonal templates you can adapt

Swap the bracketed parts. Each one is written to fit inside the visible window.

  • Q4 and Christmas: "Order by [date] for [country] Christmas delivery. [What you make], made to order and posted by me."
  • Valentine's or Mother's Day: "Personalised [product] for [occasion] — order by [date] to arrive in time. Free gift note with every order."
  • Restock: "[Bestseller] is back in stock — limited run of [number]. [What you make], made in small batches."
  • Slow season: "[What you make], made to order. Custom colours and sizes welcome — just send me a message before you order."
  • Post-holiday reset: "Back to normal dispatch: orders ship within [n] working days. [What you make], handmade in [place]."

Set a reminder to revisit it at the start of each season. An announcement advertising a sale that finished in March is the most common version of this mistake, and it quietly tells every visitor the shop is not being looked after.

Mistakes that suppress an announcement

  • Opening with "Welcome to my shop!" — it consumes a fifth of the visible window and conveys nothing.
  • Writing in full capitals, which reads as shouting and is harder to scan on a phone.
  • Leaving a stale sale or an expired holiday cut-off in place after the date has passed.
  • Packing the opening with keywords for Etsy search, which does not read the field for ranking and leaves the sentence unreadable for the people who do.
  • Burying the one urgent fact — a closure, a delay, a deadline — below the "read more" line where almost nobody will see it.
  • Duplicating your shop policies here, when the shopper can already reach them and the space is better spent on why to buy.
  • Writing it once at launch and never returning to it.

How to update your shop announcement

From your Shop Manager, open your shop's home page for editing and you will find the announcement field near the top, above your listing sections. Save, then load your public shop page as a visitor would and check where the text is cut off — the truncation point is easier to see on the live page than in the editor, and on a phone it arrives sooner than you expect.

While you are looking at the shop as a whole, the announcement is one of several first-impression signals a visitor reads at the same time as your banner, avatar, sections and policies. The Etsy Shop Analyzer scores those together, which is a faster way to find the weak one than judging each in isolation.

Common questions about Etsy shop announcements

What is an Etsy shop announcement?

It is a short block of text Etsy shows near the top of your shop home page, above your listings. Unlike a listing description it speaks for the whole shop, so it is where you say what you make, what is happening right now, and anything a shopper should know before they buy. It is also the text Google most often shows as the description for your shop.

How long can an Etsy shop announcement be?

Longer than you should use. Etsy cuts the announcement off after roughly 160 characters and hides the remainder behind a "read more" link that most shoppers never click, so the practical limit is that first line. Put what matters inside it and keep processing times, care notes and policy detail for the part below.

Does the shop announcement affect Etsy SEO?

Not directly. Etsy search ranks individual listings using their titles, tags, attributes and categories, and the shop announcement is not one of those fields, so keywords added there will not lift a listing. It helps in two indirect ways: Google indexes it as the description of your shop page, and a clear announcement keeps visitors moving toward a listing instead of leaving, which does feed the engagement signals Etsy responds to.

What should I put in my Etsy shop announcement?

Say what you make in plain words, then the one thing happening now such as a sale or a shipping deadline, then the reassurance that removes the biggest doubt, which is usually current processing time. Finish with a pointer to where they should look next. Lead with the product rather than a greeting: "Welcome to my shop" spends a fifth of the visible space saying nothing.

How often should I update my shop announcement?

At the start of each season, and immediately whenever a sale ends, a holiday cut-off passes or your dispatch time changes. A stale announcement advertising a finished sale is the most common mistake with this field, and it signals to every visitor that the shop is not being watched.

How do I change my Etsy shop announcement?

Open your shop home page for editing from Shop Manager; the announcement field sits near the top, above your listing sections. After saving, view your public shop page as a visitor and check where the text is truncated, because the cut-off point is easier to judge on the live page than in the editor and it arrives sooner on a phone.

An announcement speaks to buyers who have already found the shop. Getting them there is a separate job: the guide to Etsy SEO tools compares what title, tag and description tools actually do for shop and listing visibility. If the announcement is promoting a sale or a bundle, price the discount first — the free Etsy fee calculator shows what the order still leaves you after Etsy’s fees.
