What to Sell on Etsy: How to Pick a Product That Sells

Sell something Etsy allows, that buyers already search for, and that still leaves you a profit after fees. Etsy allows items you made, designed, handpicked or sourced. Below are product ideas for each, and a four-question test to pick one before you list it.

What Etsy lets you sell

Etsy’s Creativity Standards say everything listed must be made, designed, handpicked or sourced by you. Those four words are the whole menu:

  • Made by you. Items you make by hand, or with computerised tools such as a 3D printer, a CNC machine or a Cricut.
  • Designed by you. Your own design as a digital download, or printed onto a physical item by a third party. Etsy counts creations you prompted with AI in this group.
  • Handpicked by you. Vintage items at least 20 years old, items from nature, and certain curated collections.
  • Sourced by you. Items that let the buyer be creative, such as craft supplies and party decorations, and items personalised with the buyer’s own text or image.

What does not fit is reselling mass-produced goods. If you could buy the same thing from a wholesaler and list it unchanged, Etsy is not the place for it.

Product ideas by shop type

Shop typeIdeas to start fromWhat to watch
Made by handCandles, jewellery, ceramics, knitwear, leather goods, soap, wooden itemsTime per item. If it takes an hour, the price has to pay for the hour.
Digital downloadsPlanners, printable wall art, templates, spreadsheets, cut files, invitationsMany sellers, so a clear niche beats a broad one. No shipping, but still a listing fee per listing.
Your design, printed by someone elseShirts, mugs, posters, stickers, tote bagsThe design must be yours. Your margin is what is left after the printer’s price and Etsy’s fees.
VintageGlassware, jewellery, clothing, ceramics, decor that is 20 years old or moreEvery item is one of a kind, so you restock by sourcing, not by reordering.
Supplies and personalisedBeads, fabric, stickers, name necklaces, custom portraits, pet itemsPersonalisation needs clear instructions for the buyer, or you spend your day on messages.

A four-question test before you list anything

  1. Can you make or source it again and again? A product you can only produce once is a hobby. Picture ten orders in one week and ask whether you could ship them.
  2. Do buyers search for it? Type the product into Etsy’s search bar and read the suggestions: they come from what shoppers type. Our guide to Etsy keyword research shows how to find and compare phrases for free.
  3. Does it leave a profit after fees? Price the product, add what it costs you and what shipping costs you, then run it through the Etsy fee calculator. If the profit per sale is thin, change the product or the price before you list, not after. The Etsy shipping calculator shows what free shipping would do to the price.
  4. Can you stand out on the first page? Search the main phrase and look at the first row of results. If every listing is the same plain product, ask what you would change: a tighter niche, better photos, a bundle, or a personalised version.

Mistakes that cost new sellers a shop or a month

  • Using a brand or a character. Disney, sports teams and similar names belong to someone else, and Etsy removes listings after a complaint.
  • Copying a bestseller exactly. Copying someone’s design breaches their rights, and a copy with no difference gives buyers no reason to pick yours.
  • Starting too wide. A shop with candles, phone cases and printables gives search and buyers nothing to remember. Start with one product family.
  • Ignoring the season. Gifts and holiday items sell weeks before the date, so list them early.

Once you have picked a product

Open the shop with how to open an Etsy shop, choose a name with the free shop name generator, and write the first listing with the title generator and tag generator. The free listing checker then tells you what the listing is still missing.

Frequently asked questions

What sells best on Etsy?

Etsy does not publish a best-seller list, so any ranking you see is a guess. What you can check yourself is demand and competition: the suggestions in Etsy's search bar show what shoppers type, and the first page of results shows how many sellers already offer the same thing. A specific product with a clear buyer usually beats a broad one.

Can I sell digital products on Etsy?

Yes. Etsy allows your own designs as digital downloads, such as printables, planners and templates. Each listing still has a listing fee and each sale the usual transaction and payment processing fees, but there is nothing to ship.

Can I resell products on Etsy?

Not mass-produced goods. Everything has to be made, designed, handpicked or sourced by you under Etsy's Creativity Standards. Vintage items at least 20 years old and craft supplies are allowed, as are your own designs printed by a third party.

Can I sell print on demand products on Etsy?

Yes, if the design is your own. Etsy allows you to use a third party to print your design onto a physical item. Check your margin first, because the printer's price and Etsy's fees both come out of the sale.

How do I know if a product is worth selling on Etsy?

Check four things: you can make or source it repeatedly, buyers search for it, it leaves a profit after fees and shipping, and you can offer something that looks different from the first row of results. The Etsy fee calculator covers the profit check in a minute.
