How to Check if an Etsy Shop Is Legit

Updated by

Before you order, check four things on the shop: its reviews, how long it has been selling and how much, its policies, and whether the photos are its own. Then pay only through Etsy checkout, so Etsy’s Purchase Protection covers the order if something goes wrong.

Five checks before you buy

  1. Read the reviews, starting with the worst. The shop page shows the average rating and the number of reviews. A high average from a handful of reviews tells you less than a slightly lower one from hundreds. Sort past the five-star reviews and read the low ones: are they about slow shipping, or about the item not being what the photos showed? Look at how the seller answered them, and at reviews that include buyers’ own photos.
  2. Look at the shop’s history. The shop page shows how long the shop has been on Etsy and, for most shops, how many sales it has made. A shop that opened last month with hundreds of near-identical listings deserves a closer look than one with years of steady sales.
  3. Read the shop policies. They say whether the seller accepts returns, exchanges and cancellations, and how long processing takes. A missing or vague policy is not proof of a scam, but it tells you what to expect if you need help.
  4. Check that the photos are the seller’s own. Run the main photo through a reverse image search. If the same picture appears on wholesale or marketplace sites at a fraction of the price, the item is probably resold rather than made, designed or curated by the seller, which Etsy’s rules do not allow.
  5. Look for the Star Seller badge. It means the shop has answered messages quickly, shipped on time and kept an average rating of 4.8 or higher over the last three months. Not having it does not mean a shop is bad, especially a new one, but having it is a good sign. What the Star Seller badge requires.

Red flags

  • The seller asks you to pay outside Etsy: bank transfer, gift cards, another website or a payment link in a message. Etsy’s Help requests and cases work on orders placed through Etsy checkout.
  • A price far below every similar listing, especially on branded or designer goods.
  • Stock photos with no real close-ups, and a description copied from elsewhere.
  • A brand-new shop with a huge catalogue and no reviews.

What Etsy Purchase Protection covers

For qualifying orders, Etsy’s Purchase Protection gives you a full refund when the item:

  • does not arrive,
  • arrives damaged,
  • arrives 7 or more days after the latest estimated delivery date shown at checkout, or
  • is significantly different from the description or photos, such as the wrong material or colour.

Start by sending the seller a Help request from your order. If the problem is not solved 48 hours after your first message, you can ask Etsy to step in. If you checked out as a guest, connect the order to an Etsy account first, because you need one to start a Help request. Items delayed by events outside the seller’s control, such as a carrier strike or severe weather, and items held because the buyer did not pay customs charges, do not qualify.

Are you the seller?

Buyers make these checks in seconds, so make your shop pass them: real photos from every angle, clear policies, and listings that say exactly what arrives. The free Etsy listing checker scores a listing and lists what to fix, and the Etsy shop analyzer does the same for the shop page.

Frequently asked questions

How can I tell if an Etsy seller is legit?

Read the low-star reviews and how the seller answered them, check how long the shop has been on Etsy and how many sales it shows, read its policies, and reverse image search the main photo. A Star Seller badge is a good sign. Pay only through Etsy checkout so Purchase Protection applies.

Is it safe to buy on Etsy?

Orders placed through Etsy checkout are covered by Etsy's Purchase Protection when an item does not arrive, arrives damaged, arrives 7 or more days after the latest estimated delivery date, or is significantly different from the listing. Checking the shop first still saves you the trouble of a claim.

What should I do if my Etsy order never arrives?

Send the seller a Help request from the order. If it is not resolved 48 hours after your first message, you can ask Etsy to step in. If the order qualifies for Purchase Protection, you get a full refund.

Should I pay an Etsy seller outside of Etsy?

No. Etsy's Help requests and cases work on orders placed through Etsy checkout. A seller asking for a bank transfer, gift cards or payment through another site is a red flag.
